In our not so distant past, thousands of Americans joined together, people of all races and backgrounds, to protest peacefully racial injustice. Martin Luther King, Jr. was at the forefront of the movement for civil rights and many civil rights leaders didn’t think President John F. Kennedy was supportive enough of their efforts. The President believed that holding public protests would only anger many white people and make it even more difficult to convince the members of Congress who didn't agree with him to pass civil rights laws. By June 11, 1963, however, President Kennedy decided that the time had come to take stronger action to help the civil rights struggle. He proposed a new Civil Rights bill to the Congress, and he went on television asking Americans to end racism. "One hundred years of delay have passed since President Lincoln freed the slaves, yet their heirs, their grandsons, are not fully free," he said. "This Nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds…[and] on the principle that all men are created equal." President Kennedy made it clear that all Americans, regardless of their skin color, should enjoy the same rights and freedoms as white their white counterparts. Forty-six years later, Senator Edward Kennedy along with his son Rep. Patrick Kennedy and niece Caroline Kennedy stood in solidarity to endorse the first African American President of the United State. Each of them explicitly linking President Obama to their beloved President John F. Kennedy. Senator Kennedy echoing the sentiments of his late brother, “we want a President who appeals to the hopes of those who still believe in the American ideal.” This ideal being a coming together of all people for one common goal and that is to bring about all that is good and just in America and in the American dream. Subsequent Senator Kennedy’s death President Obama stated that, “The outpouring of love, gratitude, and fond memories to which we've all borne witness is a testament to the way this singular figure in American history touched so many lives. His ideas and ideals are stamped on scores of laws and reflected in millions of lives -- in seniors who know new dignity, in families that know new opportunity, in children who know education's promise, and in all who can pursue their dream in an America that is more equal and more just -- including myself.” and that “His extraordinary life on this earth has come to an end. And the extraordinary good that he did lives on. For his family, he was a guardian. For America, he was the defender of a dream. I think even with the imperfection of the past, we can say with the utmost certainty that the next generations of Kennedy’s will not fail the charge that has been so clearly laid before them: And yes, with it still will come “politics as usual” yet somehow, someway progress is won. *JFKlibrary.org *White House
Yes, Camelot has come to represent this incredible mythical time in royal American history but can anyone completely deny that the Kennedy family has left an extraordinary legacy that is indelibly stitched into the fabric of our global community forever. There are a myriad of Kennedy achievements, scandals and tragedy that has all but graced, shocked and saddened a nation. Yet, we can be certain that what was given will endure far beyond what has been lost or stolen. The contributions of the Kennedy family run deep and wide and the effects of their achievements will be felt for many decades to come. These achievements will surely triumph over all the failures and disillusionment.
Well some may say that the newly confirmed Associate Justice Sonya Sotomayor has nothing to do with the Television and Film Industry but we beg to differ. Just think back a little to the headlines “President Barack Obama, First African American President of the Unites States of America.” A variation of this proclamation as you know dominated headlines and graced the cover of ever major and not-so-major publication as well television screen. Remember the adage “Art imitating life”? Well, if you believe that art imitates life, then the evolution of life as we know it will have a major effect on what is created. Yes, we’ve already seen Dennis Haysbert as president in David Palmer’s “24” but just recently renown actor Edward James Olmos was seen as judge Roberto Mendoza, a Supreme Court hopeful, in episodes of the West Wing. Although this is just one example I’m sure we can look at a myriad of movies and television shows that are either based or loosely based on true-life stories. Therefore, it’s important that when looking at the film and television industry we acknowledge the effect that every discipline and industry has on the way images are shaped and portrayed. Now the preverbal “green light” that seems to quickly turn red when certain aspects of life seek to merge with art is another story. Yet the stories are being made and becoming more and more mainstream. Perhaps there is much more to be accomplished before marginalization comes to an end?
A Journey Supreme:
On May 26, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Sotomayor for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace retired Justice David Souter. Her nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 6, 2009, by a vote of 68–31, and she was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts on August 8. Sotomayor is the Court's 111th justice, its first Hispanic justice, and its third female justice.
Sotomayor is of Puerto Rican descent and was born in the Bronx. Her father died when she was nine, and she was subsequently raised by her mother. Sotomayor graduated with an A.B., summa cum laude, from Princeton University in 1976 and received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1979, where she was an editor at the Yale Law Journal. She worked as an assistant district attorney in New York for five years before entering private practice in 1984. She played an active role on the boards of directors for the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, the State of New York Mortgage Agency, and the New York City Campaign Finance Board. Sotomayor was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by President George H. W. Bush in 1991, and her nomination was confirmed in 1992.
Sotomayor's confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee began on July 13, 2009. During them, she backed away from her "wise Latina" remark, declaring it "a rhetorical flourish that fell flat" and stating that "I do not believe that any ethnic, racial or gender group has an advantage in sound judgment. When Republican senators confronted her regarding other remarks from her past speeches, she pointed to her judicial record and said she had never let her own life experiences or opinions influence her decisions. Republican senators said that while her rulings to this point might be largely traditional, they feared her Supreme Court rulings – where there is more latitude with respect to precedent and interpretation – might be more reflective of her speeches. Sotomayor defend her position in Ricci as following applicable precedent. When asked whom she admired, she pointed to Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo. On July 28, 2009, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Sotomayor's nomination; the 13–6 vote was almost entirely along party lines, with no Democrats opposing her and only one Republican supporting her.
On August 6, 2009, Sotomayor's appointment was brought up for a vote on the floor of the Senate. She was confirmed by a vote of 68 to 31. All Democrats and the two independents who caucus with them voted in favor of confirmation, with the exception of the ailing Sen. Ted Kennedy, who was unavailable to vote due to health issues. Thirty-one Republicans opposed the nomination, and nine supported it. Sotomayor was sworn in on August 8, 2009, by Chief Justice John Roberts. She will be formally invested on September 8, 2009, in a special session of the court convened for that purpose.

As the world mourns the death of Mega-Superstar and Icon, Michael Jackson, you can’t help but look over his life’s journey and evaluate what his presence in the world has truly meant. When you think about the quintessential artist, Michael Jackson unquestionably comes to mind. Professionally, Jackson was a singer, songwriter, dancer, choreographer, director and businessman. Over the span of his career, the breath and depth of his work included an array of music styles and genres from Pop, Rock, Disco, Soul and R & B.
When Jackson’s album Thriller was released it helped to break color barriers on both radio and television. His genius was so hypnotizing that even MTV had to make concessions. Walter Yetnikoff, the former president of CBS Records, recalled that MTV would not play “Beat It” or “Billie Jean” because it considered itself a Rock station. A Los Angeles Times article written in 1991 quoted MTV founder and then CEO Robert Pitman saying that the format of the channel didn’t lend itself to other music genres including R & B and Country music. Pitman felt that the critics were trying to impose their views on MTV’s Rock fans. However, Yetnikoff threatened to pull all of his artists other videos from the channel if MTV didn’t play Jackson’s videos. His videos soon played in heavy rotation on MTV. This act, unquestionably helped to pave the way for other African American and non-rock artists alike.
The Reverend Al Sharpton was quoted as saying that “Michael Jackson made culture accept a person of color way before Tiger Woods, way before Oparah Winfrey, way before Barack Obama.” He also says, “Michael did with music what they later did in sports and in politics and in television…” Well considering that in 1947 Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in a Major League baseball game which is 78 years after Major League Baseball was founded in 1869 sort of makes Al Sharpton’s proclamation a bit of an exaggeration.
Nevertheless, Jackson has played a significant role in helping tobreakdown the color divide. Early on, the Jackson 5 became a sensation to the world and they did it with their signature afros and bell-bottoms. Mark Anthony Neal, a professor in Duke University’s African American Studies Department stated that the Jackson 5 “became a cutting-edge example of black cross-over artists.” Neal also said that Jackson was the first black “bubblegum teen star” in the vein of Monkees singer Davy Jones. It’s clear to see that Michael Jackson has without question helped to pave the way for an entire generation of black musicians male and female alike.
Even with all that The Jackson 5 and Michael, as a solo artist, has managed to accomplish on behalf of African Americans there is certainly this dichotomy between his private and professional life. Here we have a black artist who seems to have turned white right before our eyes. His change in skin color and features, due to numerous plastic surgeries, really troubled a lot of people and left them with feelings of betrayal. Yet, whether the change in his pigmentation was from Vitiligo, which is what Jackson told Oprah Winfrey during a 1993 interview or was manifested by conscious choice, his impact on black America and people all over the world remains. The barriers have still been broken, the road has still been paved and the opportunities have become limitless because of his genius. Has this phenomenon occurred just on the strength of one artist, certainly not! Yet, we must recognize the power of one and how what we can accomplish and contribute as individuals, as an artist, can impact the world.
